What Should We Wear for Our Photography Experience?

First things first — your session is all about capturing a beautiful moment in your family’s story. Whether it’s your brand-new baby, a cheeky sitter giggling away, a first birthday celebration, or just a timeless portrait of you all together… these are memories you’ll keep forever.

So the most important thing? You don’t need to stress. These sessions are relaxed, gentle, and completely led by your little one (or bump!). My job is to make sure you feel calm, comfortable, and happy — so we can capture those natural, loving moments between you all.

The goal is to keep things really simple, so that you and your family are the centre of your portraits — not your outfit. When your portraits are on the wall, you want people to see your family’s connection and love, not be distracted by bold patterns or clashing colours.

Neutrals work best — think soft whites, greys, navy, black.

For boys (and dads), plain jeans or navy trousers always look lovely. For girls (and mums), trousers tend to work best, especially for sitting and cuddling. If you prefer a skirt or dress, just go for something a bit longer — it’s all about comfort, really.

Try to avoid very loose or low-cut tops, as they can shift about during the session and might make you feel a bit fidgety or self-conscious. You’ll enjoy the session so much more if you’re comfortable!

Want to Add a Bit of Colour?

Absolutely fine — a bit of colour can be beautiful in your photos. Just try to stick to soft tones and block colours that work well together. For example, everyone wearing shades of blue or green can look really lovely, without it being too “matchy-matchy.”

The one thing to steer clear of? Big patterns and character tops. They can be a bit distracting and tend to date your portraits over time.

That said… I completely get that little ones often have very strong opinions about what they want to wear! If your toddler is determined to wear their favourite Paw Patrol top, don’t worry — we can always do a few shots in that, and then swap to something more neutral afterwards. It keeps everyone happy!

And just so you know, I do have a selection of plain t-shirts (in white, navy and black) at the studio in both adult and children’s sizes — so if we need to make a quick change, we’re all set.

Do I Need to Buy Something New?

Honestly, no. Please don’t feel like you need to buy a whole new outfit just for your session. You want to feel like you in your portraits — and sometimes, new clothes or extra makeup can make you feel a bit “not quite yourself.”

Stick with something you already love and feel good in. And as for makeup — just wear what you usually would. You want to look back at your portraits in years to come and see you, not a version of you that doesn’t feel familiar.
